Wolves of Volcano Bay, Alaska

Volcano Bay is a hidden gem for wildlife enthusiasts seeking authentic Alaskan wildlife experiences.

In addition to world-class bear viewing, this remote destination is home to a growing population of Alaskan gray wolves. On many days, visitors may spot one to four wild wolves near the lagoon—an increasingly rare opportunity for those interested in wolf watching in Alaska.

One of the most unique aspects of Volcano Bay is the chance to see two apex predators—bears and wolves—sharing habitat and feeding peacefully, particularly during the salmon run. This seasonal abundance of salmon provides essential nutrition for developing wolf pups and supports the area’s rich biodiversity.

With an estimated 7,000 to 11,000 wolves statewide, Alaska remains one of the last strongholds for wild gray wolves. These wolves have never been listed as endangered in the state, and at Volcano Bay, we’ve observed at least two identifiable individuals returning year after year—one of them a mature male, recognizable by a distinctive shoulder scar and a near white female.

If you’re searching for unforgettable Alaskan wildlife tours or exclusive wolf and bear photography opportunities, Volcano Bay offers a truly rare and wild experience.

Prime Wolf Photography Season at Volcano Bay

For 4–5 weeks each summer, Volcano Bay offers one of the most exclusive wildlife photography opportunities in Alaska: the chance to photograph and film wild Alaskan wolves in their natural habitat as they fish for salmon.

This rare window of prime wolf activity allows photographers and nature lovers to capture these elusive predators in action—set against one of the most stunning and remote backdrops in North America.

On average, guests experience 2–3 wolf sightings per day, alongside a host of other iconic Alaskan wildlife. These include coastal brown bears, red foxes, porcupines, caribou, reindeer, sea otters, sea lions, harbor seals, walrus, humpback whales, orca, and puffins. Nearly 200 bird species nest nearby on Amak Island, making it a premier destination for birdwatching in Alaska.

Adding to the richness of the experience, three species of Pacific salmon—sockeye, chum, and silver—return to the streams and shallows, often just feet away from where you’re standing. Whether you’re a seasoned wildlife photographer or an adventurer seeking an unforgettable encounter, Volcano Bay delivers unparalleled access to Alaska’s wild heart.
