Our Volcano Bay story
Bush Pilot guide Charlie Summerville started visiting Volcano Bay in the mid 90's via access of his 1st airplane a pa 20 on tundra wheels. He would take 1-2 guests per day over there to Photograph the Brown Bears and to flyfish for Salmon in the nearbye streams while staying in Cold Bay. They actually filmed 2 Tv series with Gander mountain in the late 90's in Cold Bay and Volcano Bay. Around 2007 Charlie started exploring and Pioneering other areas of Alaska including Adak Island so he took a few years off from the area always dreaming of the day to return. In 2017 a year after he sold his ATA lodge in Katmai Park he decided to return to his 1st love and after 10 years he wondered if it was still the magical place it once was.
Capt Charlie Strikes Gold
Capt Charlie wasn't dissapointed and started going back over to the area with guest's and in 2020 he negotiated a deal with a local to purchase the only private piece of land in the area surrounded by 32,000 acres of private land allowing no other access. In 2022 his family started construction of a small wilderness camp and in 2023 they finished there 2nd Cabin that will accomidate 6 guest's total per week. The building of Volcano Bay has been recently featured on Life on the Edge in season 1 Aired on the outdoor channel. season 2 was filmed during the 2023 summer season to be aired in fall of 2024. Volcano Bay WIlderness Camp is a true family affair and enjoyed my everyone who visits this magical place.
